A man who worked for years to protect sharks, 51-year-old Brian Guest of Australia, was attacked by a Great White while he was searching for crabs just 100 feet from shore. His remains were not found but his ripped up wetsuit washed up on the beach.
This story echoes that of Timothy Treadwell. Remember him? He was the bear lover who got mauled to death by one, and was the subject of Werner Herzog's movie Grizzly Man.
Even though a person is more likely to drown in a bathtub than die from a shark attack, Brian Guest knew the dangers of the ocean and he seemed at peace with the possibility of meeting his fate there. In 2004 he posted this in Western Angler, a fishing forum:
"I have always had an understanding with my wife that if a shark or
ocean accident caused my death then so be it, at least it was doing
what I wanted. Every surfer, fisherman and diver has far more chance of
being killed by bees, drunk drivers, teenage car thieves and lightning.
Every death is a tragedy – regardless of the cause – but we have no
greater claim to use of this earth than any of the other creatures [we]
share it with."
