South African Runner… Man or Woman?

Caster Semenya

The story of South African runner Caster Semenya reminds me of the movie It's Pat where the gender of Pat is a mystery to everyone. After winning first place at the Track & Field World Championships, Caster's gender is now in question. Not only did she win gold, Caster blew away the competition. It also doesn't help that Caster looks like a dude–broad shoulders, bulging muscles, lack of boobs and man-face. Experts have begun an investigation on Caster's gender but it will take months for answers.

Ok, so it's going to take months to figure out if Caster has a va-jay-jay or a schlong? Hmmm… can't they just pull down her pants? But I guess if she had a penis she could have it surgically transformed into a vadge. Seriously though, there are plenty of manly looking women, for example Ru Paul… Oh wait, she's an actual man. Nevermind.

What do you guys think? Should they just leave her alone or continue with the investigation?

  1. I remember when the Olympics stopped testing women after a few were shocked to find out they were genetic hermaphrodites. Wonder if there’s something like that going on here.
I’d say an investigation is justified just to make sure she didn’t have a sex change. Anything beyond that, I say let it go.
Like her last name, though. Semen-ya.

  2. Also “her” voice and MANnerisms are more butch than many guys out there. There isn’t even any hint of femininity.

I remember years ago, the exact same controversy occurred in my home country regarding a track & field athlete. He/she was proven to be a rare case of hermaphroditism. I suspect this is another classic case of intersexism.

  3. We could just ask “it” but then.. getting a honest answer from sneaky South Africans – black or white, might be tough.

  4. We could just ask “it” the question, but getting a correct answer from a sneaky South African, black or white, might be tough.

  5. The flippancy with which this post treats this subject is off-putting. This is about an 18-year-old human being who now faces tremendous pressure and scrutiny simply for being what she is. You might try showing her some sensitivity instead of going for cheap laughs at her expense.
For those interested in a more thoughtful and considerate report about this, here is a link to an article in today’s New York Times:

  6. I’m from South Africa and I’ve see nloads of weird shit but I’m convinced that that girl is a guy! The gay black men in South Africa are all queens and almost 80% of them wear dresses and high heels. It makes it almost impossible to recognize them then so I won’t be surprised if that girl had a dick hanging underneath…….

  7. wow, manhunt. as if genderqueer/genderfluid/intersex folks don’t have enough challenges getting through their days, you put up a teeheeweinerorvajayjay bullshit post like this, which encourages genderbashing… BY THE REST OF THE GAY COMMUNITY.
    golf clap.
This is an interesting story, and there are ways to discuss it which don’t make you look like a bunch of queens sipping cocktails and ironically whining about your “rights.”
p.s,: canceling my MH account, and removing this tripe from my rss feed. you do the math.
