The Big C: Not As Depressing As You’d Think

Getting diagnosed with terminal cancer. While it may not sound like the most exciting or uplifting premise for a television show, that didn’t stop Showtime from giving the green light to The Big C. The original series stars award-winning actress Laura Linney as a suburban mother who “grabs life by the balls” upon discovering that life’s too precious to waste.

Watching the first episode is sure to elicit a roller coaster of emotions, especially for those who have lost loved ones to cancer or are currently fighting their own battle. However, the show’s about a lot more than a disease. It’s about taking control of your life and letting go of your inhibitions.

As you might expect, Linney’s performance is utterly fantastic, and it helps that her supporting cast ain’t half bad either. For starters, there’s Gabourey Sidibe of Precious. She costars as a bratty student named Andrea, who appears in one of the episode’s most hilarious scenes. Click through to watch, and be sure to tune in next Monday, August 16th!

  1. I absolutely love Laura as an actress! Every project she takes on she does with the same morph-like quality that Meryl has.

I wonder how this/her character would react as a Jet Blue flight attendent with shitty passengers…

  2. Watched the whole first episode @ SHO.com. It’s hysterical and heart-breaking at the same time. Laura Linney is INCREDIBLE!!! The relationship between Linney. Oliver Platt(who plays her confused husband). and their teenage son should make for the best family dynamic this side of “United States of Tara, also on Showtime. HBO??

  3. The first episode is available on Showtime-On-Demand and is destined to be another hit for Showtime! Not depressing at all, in fact it’s hilari-ass!

  4. Michael, please look up the definition of “hysterical.”

And everyone else who thinks it’s a synonym of “hilarious” should too.

  5. I personally don’t find anything hilarious about cancer. You can have a good attitude about it, but it’s not a fun thing to go thru. I just went thru all of the treatments. Not a good experience at all. Maybe I took the whole show wrong, but some things you just can’t make look good. Period.

  6. hmm whatdo you suggest instead? shave your head, (oops it already fell out) , lock yours elf in a room, while rubbng ashes over your body, and chantting kumbaya and watch the clock tick away the mins of your life, while sitting yoga style n a bed of nails, with a yellow bucket on the side for when you throw up from the treatment, all the while a doll made of your pubic hairs looks appprovingly on..

  7. Wow, stayingpositive: I’m sure you will say you’ve been there, but I wasn’t supposed to live. I spent most of my time in the hospital during treatment.
I DID shave my head! I didn’t want to see the hair fall out. My way of dealing with it. I didn’t lock myself in a room, didn’t rub ashes all over my body, nor chant anything. But when you are almost dead and can’t move, there’s not much to do but watch the minutes of your life tick by.
NOW, I live life to the fullest! Not spending time on here trashing someone because they commented on thier own experience. Jerkface.
