No one said the prom queen had to be a girl, right? That was the logic Sergio Garcia of Fairfax High used when he decided to run against a handful of female candidates.
In a speech to his classmates, Garcia said, "At one time, prom may have been a big popularity contest where the best-looking guy or girl were crowned king and queen. Things have changed and it's no longer just about who has the most friends or who wears the coolest clothes. Sure, I'm not your typical prom queen candidate. There's more to me than meets the eye."
The rest of his class seemed to think so as well, because Garcia wound up taking the prize. Dressed in a tuxedo, he stepped on stage to accept his tiara in victory.
Isn't this an amazing screenplay just waiting to be written? At least there's some good news in California.

Did he have a spotlight dance with the King?
What an awesome story 🙂 I wish I was that happy in high school… 🙁
This is heartwarming.
Baby steps for the heterosexuals, LEAPS and BOUNDS for the homosexuals!!..Congrats!!
I wouldn’t say its baby steps for straight people since it’s a younger generation we don’t give a fuck, however I’m probably not with my generation since I find it a bit odd a boy being prom queen.
I do like the play on semantics though.
A flamboyant gay male at my high school was voted queen at prom but it was to mock him. Pretty cruel, in fact, they banned prom king and queen from our high school for 3 years as a result. I was a freshman when it happen in 1998 so by the time I graduated in 2001, we were allowed to have prom king and queen again. Truth be told, I made it to the prom court but was not crowed king. I was not out at the time so it’s interesting to look back on it. Oh well… no one really cares about it anyways.
I didn’t even go to my prom. Then again, I dumped my cover girlfriend the day before (not intentionally) and wound up being taken to another prom as a guy’s date. Also, my school never did the whole prom king and queen thing. We never even had a court.
Doesn’t anyone else think this only reinforces the stereotype that gay men are a bunch of sissy queens? It’s great to see a gay man being voted prom KING, I admit, but queen? Come on? He’s gay, not transgendered…
