Esau Mwamwaya first caught my attention with “Kamphopo”, a track on which he sampled Swedish Australian indie band Architecture In Helsinki‘s “Heart It Races”. From there, he continued his collaboration with production/DJ duo Radioclit under the name “The Very Best“, teaming up with artists such as M.I.A., Crookers and Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend along the way.
(Apologies if this is redundant for those of you who are familiar. Apologies if this sounds pretentious for those of you who aren’t familiar.)
Now, The Very Best are back with “Yoshua Alikuti”, the first single from their forthcoming album. Much like their previous efforts, it’s sung in Chichewa (the national language of Malawi), but that certainly shouldn’t stop those of you who aren’t fluent in Chichewa from enjoying it. This defies barriers. It’s just great music.
