In today’s edition of improper labels in the media, fellow blog POPWIRED has classified Glee‘s Darren Criss as a “bear”. What. The. Fuck? This made us do a double take, considering the actor isn’t even close to full-on bear status. He’s stick thin, clean-shaven and prettier than most of our lady-friends.
Alas, the gay media will call anything with hair on its chest a “bear”. It’s not like Darren Criss is so hairy that he’s practically wearing a fur coat. In that case, we could sort of understand the “bear in the making” reference. But then he’d just be an otter, which apparently isn’t enough of a buzz word to get people to write angry rants about your misguided designations.
So we’ve already established that Darren Criss isn’t a bear, right? Let’s move on to something else he’s not–gay. Though he plays uber-homosexual Blaine on the hit show, this guy is one-hundred percent batting for the other team.
He told OUT magazine, “I think it’s more empowering to everybody, including myself, if I’m articulate about identifying myself as a straight male playing a gay character. Ultimately, that’s more powerful for both communities.” On that note, wouldn’t it be extremely “powerful” if Darren Criss posed naked to show his support for equality? Just putting it out there.

I think it is empowering for him to be playing gay, as in it is empowering his bank account… a lot of “great” gay roles r played by straight guys…

I think it is disempowering that gay roles still go to straight actors…. Christopher/Kurt is the empowering one in that show (a gay man playing a gay role), even if he is still under the premises of the Celluloid Closet (read book or watch documentary, i does not mean he is in the closet, but that he plays a very specific kind of gay stereotype)….
now, to the matter at hand…. I think that bear/otter/wolf etc r gay categories….. not straight ones…. so while he might look like one of them(I’d say he looks twink-ish), he is not a twink…
and I think he looks cuter on TV than on these pictures…. here it seems he is trying too hard to be sexy….. on the show it is more subtle, his eyes, gestures, etc….
