As for tattoos: We live in culture where tattoos have become a form of “personal expression” and “marking your individualism,” (you could make a solid argument that there’s really no true individualism and personal expression in tattoos, but that’s something for another day entirely) instead of a society with a highly ritualized tattoo culture like the Maori. What that means for us is that a person’s choices for tattoos are not to everyone’s liking. It’s all a question of taste and not every tattoo is right for everyone (even among people with ink). But it’s our choice to modify our own bodies the way we see fit (whatever piercings, haircuts, scarification, etc someone wants, get it, who cares). Who am I to judge and who am I to care how someone else adorns their own body? It is so disconcerting to always read the anti-tattoo comments on here.
But consider the fact that this guy has a tattoo on his back. He never sees it himself unless he sets up two mirrors—only other people see it. Thus he’s making a public statement with his tattoo…and the public is entitled to have a response to it. And my reaction to this particular tattoo is that it’s inane for a white guy who undoubtedly cannot read Chinese and has probably never been to China to get a Chinese character tattoo, taking it on faith that it means “peace, love, brotherhood…” or something equally “profound,” when it could just as easily mean “roast pork fried rice…”
