Weekly Top Ten: Don’t Hold It Against Her

Despite mixed reactions to her latest single “Hold It Against Me”, it’s pretty inevitable that Britney Spears will be sitting atop next week’s edition of the Weekly Top Ten. I mean, should we even bother having a vote? While Adele and Katy Perry continue to pull in big numbers, their fans don’t stand a chance against the rabid “Godney” brigade.

Pop’s favorite underdog Pink was lucky enough to get out before the massacre, retiring her tune “Raise Your Glass” after fifteen weeks on the countdown. On her way out, she’ll provide excellent company for this week’s rejected selections–Aiden James, Marsha Ambrosius and Roxette.

So how does this all work? If you’re a Weekly Top Ten virgin, hold onto Heath Jordan‘s cock while I explain the rules to you. Each week you’ll be presented with ten songs. You get to vote for up to three that you’d like to see move on to the next week. From those results, we’ll take the five tunes with the highest percentages, a song we save and four other contributions. These selections will make up the following week’s charts.

Wishing there was a “none of the above” option? Well, quit your bitching and tell us what you want to see on the charts by leaving a suggestion in the comments. We listen to nearly every song you recommend, and if we think it’ll have a chance… you might see it here next time around!

– Dewitt

To check out the charts and cast your vote, follow the JUMP:

  1. Adele – Rolling In The Deep (LW – 1, W6): On a purely technical basis, Adele tied with Katy Perry for the number one spot. So why the hell is she sitting on top instead of Mrs. Russell Brand? Duh, because it’s alphabetical order! And we have the final say in these matters…
  2. Katy Perry – Firework (LW – 6, W7): After falling to sixth place on last week’s charts, “Firework” has bounced back all the way to the moon! Plastic bags everywhere are rejoicing over this unlikely victory, as they realize they’re not alone in this cold, harsh world.
  3. Florence + The Machine – Dog Days Are Over (LW – 3, W4): We’re always surprised by your loyalty to Florence Welch. Sure, she’s got a voice that makes us stop in our tracks and drop everything we’re doing, but since when has this countdown been about actual talent?
  4. Cher – You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me (LW – 5, W9): “I’ve been brought down to my knees. I’ve been pushed way past the point of breaking, but I can take it.” Either these are the lyrics of Cher’s single from Burlesque, or it’s a description of the last time I bottomed for a dominant daddy top.
  5. Kanye West f/ Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj & Bon Iver – Monster (LW – 9, W2): Love it or hate it, Kanye West has cracked into the top five on our Weekly Top Ten! Consider this a victory for hip-hop fans everywhere, and a slap in the face for anyone who wonders why we write about the genre.
  6. Avril Lavigne – What The Hell (LW – 10, W2): Why are we offering the sixth place spot to Avril motherfucking Lavigne? We’re not entirely sure, but she’s one of the few folks who might stand a chance on next week’s charts. Shockingly, “What The Hell” is starting to catch on, despite being the most annoying song ever.
  7. Britney Spears – Hold It Against Me (DEBUT): Though most critics showered Britney’s new tune with praise, their opinion wasn’t shared by a good portion of Manhunt Daily readers. Either way, “Hold it Against Me” is on the right track to becoming a number one hit, thanks to digital sales and a whole lot of airplay.
  8. David Guetta f/ Rihanna – Who’s That Chick? (RETURN): Baby, you just wanna day-yah-yah-yah-yah-yance! This former Doritos jingle took first place in our Wild Card round, taking in nearly half of the votes. Will Rihanna and David Guetta dance their way into the top five?
  9. Ricky Martin – The Best Thing About Me Is You (RETURN): While Ricky only came in second place against Rihanna, he received more votes in the Wild Card round than Cher and Kanye West on last week’s actual countdown. So did you just vote for him because he took his shirt off? Because it’s definitely not the song…
  10. Taylor Swift – Back To December (DEBUT): Based on Swift’s previous performance on the Weekly Top Ten, she doesn’t stand a chance against this week’s selections. With that said, you offered up some surprisingly positive feedback about this single. Is her luck turning around? Stay tuned in to find out!

  1. would rather listen to any of ’em! their music (all of it) sucks! i’d rather listen to a bunch of screaming monkey’s trying to figure out what to do with a guitar then listen to that crap

  2. Firework is still the anthem of choice, whether it’s on the dancefloor, in my headphones while riding the train or playing in the car while driving it is great ever time I hear it!

Britney does not need any help from me, so my other votes went to Adele and the getting sexier every day, Ricky Martin.

  3. And yet, I fear for the world if that youtube link was to ever become mainstream.
It’s called happiness, try it sometime…

  4. Who was it that Deemed all gays listen to that shit?! I get that some of us do and yes thats cool for them but Me personally Listen to Anything metal, classic rock and am a big Psychopathic Records Fan so not everyone listens to that stuff. Why not include other artists from like rock or something theres got to be gay clubs out there that play other stuff than whats being reported as the “top 10” lol IMO anyways lol.

  5. I don’t know what the hell your problem is with Katy Perry, but if she tied with Adele on “a purely technical basis” then maybe the artist who has been on the list longer should have gotten the higher spot. I’m just saying. Alphabetically just shows that you have a vendetta against the talented Perry and are continuing to show preferential treatment in a vote that I thought we (the readers) were supposed to have some kind of role in. Here’s an idea. You just tell me what I’m supposed to like and I’ll agree like the dumb little kid you seem to take me for.

  6. Who said Katy Perry is talented? She’s just hot and has great producers, but she’s nothing more than an annoying bitch. Granted, “Firework” is a good song, but not a classic.

My votes went to Adele, Cher and Avril. We all know Britney will be on top for the next 4 weeks until “Born this way” crashes into the countdown.

  7. I like both Adele and Katy Perry. I am a music fan and I enjoy talking about the music that I like. I do my best to remain classy and not bore everyone with ranting on and on about music that I don’t like so much.

It would be nice if Dewitt would show some class and refrain from boring us with the commentary about his personal dislikes. I’m more than happy to hear his favorites, but no one likes a negative nelly.

  9. +1 to both of you.

I’d recommend doing what I did: stop voting. It’s not really a poll…it’s more of a “I’m going to look at these votes and then ignore them.” sort of deal. Then again this is Dewitt we’re talking about so it shouldn’t be a surprise. =)

  10. I also stopped voting a while back because of the same issue expressed above.

When I stopped voting, it was rare to get more than one or two comments expressing disgust over the dictatorial nature of this poll. This was amongst 50-100 comments, too.

It’s heart warming to see more and more people noticing and expressing this injustice, and amongst fewer comments also.

What i find especially funny though, is the fact the poll is receiving far fewer votes than normal, even to the point where the blogger has had to implore more people to get on board.

However, the real question is when will all these signs bring forth change?

  11. I only voted for Adele and Florence and the machine. They’re the only two I can really stand listening to non stop and they are both extremely talented. And I think Adele could vocally woop Katy’s ass any day so she deserves number one thanks Dewitt for making it happen.

  12. How about this when a song ties:

    1.
    1.
    3.
    4.
    5.
    6.
    7.
    8.
    9.
    10.

This is how they do it with sports’ rankings and when other things get a tie.

  13. Dewitt, are you completely unaware that the plastic bag metaphor in Katy’s Firework was also used in the Oscar winner for Best Picture, American Beauty?

Just curious, did you also have such hate and disgust for American Beauty?

So once again, I’d much rather hear about what you like than hear about what you hate….

  14. I really love the new P!nk song. It actually reminds me of some of her older hits.

I think you should put it on that aural only segment and see what people think, then debut it.

I also like the new Chris Brown song – “Yeah X 3” or “Yeah Yeah Yeah.” I am not sure how it goes – haha.

Another suggestion, although probably way to slow for this site is Sarah McLachlan’s new one – “Forgiveness.” It is such a beautiful song.

Lastly, have a listen to Nelly Furtado’s upcoming single “Girlfriend In The City.” Maybe you can feature that in an aural only spotlight.

    Cheers!

  15. Adele deserves that #1 more than Katy Perry because she’s more talented. I want to recommend for next week’s Wild Card “Invincible” by Tinie Tempah featuring Kelly Rowland. He’s a UK rapper that was already featured here a couple of months ago, but now he’s back on the news for being the most nominated artist this year for the BRIT awards. Also, it would be great to see Jessie J back with “Do it like a dude”. That song is now at #2 in the Official British Chart.

  16. I like the Tinie Tempah collab with Kelly Rowland. “Written in the stars” failed miserably here last year, but this new single is better and now with all the buzz about his BRIT nominations, it seems he will be even bigger in the music scene in 2011. Don’t forget the UK acts in the new year, Dewitt. Adele was a good move on your part.

  17. No one really can comment on talent.

Adelle has an amazing voice in her genre. However, would she be able to sing pop/top 40 songs like Katy Perry – perhaps not.

Katy Perry has an alright voice, but knows how to market herself, win over fans, get played on the radio, and sell millions of albums. Could she sing bluesy music like Adele – perhaps not.

The moderators of this site love Britney’s new song, and yet critisize the lyrics to Firework. Have they actually listened to the lyrics to “Hold It Against Me”? They are cheese central, but it is still a good pop song. I think the moderators and some peeps comentating hate certain artists and that forms their opinion.

So how to we measure success?
    Quality of voice?
    Radio Play?
    Albums Sold?
    Songwriting?
    Who can really say?

Let people love the music that they love. For all of us music touches something personal. Does it matter if it is a paperbag? Does it matter if it rolls in the deep? Who cares. As long as someone loves it, let them love it.
