Weekly Top Ten Wild Card: Hip-Hop Vs. Indie

While Pink and Katy Perry duke it out for the number one spot on this Saturday’s Weekly Top Ten, we’re over here trying to figure out which songs should make an appearance on the countdown. Honestly, we would have loved to show some love for The Maccabeats, but Hanukkah will be over by the time our charts make their debut! Which artist is most deserving of the oh-so-coveted final position?

It’s another genre war in this week’s round of the Wild Card. In one corner, we’ve got a pair of stellar tracks by T.I. and B.o.B, two rappers who seem especially fond of punctuation. Meanwhile, the other side of the ring is populated by Sufjan Stevens and Twin Sister, both beloved darlings of the hipster blogosphere. Who will take it all? Click through to vote!

To listen to these selections and cast your vote, follow the JUMP:

T.I. f/ Christina Aguilera – Castle Walls: Do we really need another song where a famous person complains about being famous? In this case, the answer is “yes”. Pop diva Christina Aguilera sounds more at home on this track than she did for Bionic or Burlesque, and this has potential to become her first number one U.S. hit since “Lady Marmalade”. We’d say something nice about T.I. too, but let’s be honest… This track’s all about the chorus.

B.o.B – The Watchers: On the flip side, this track doesn’t even have a chorus. We’re digging this socially conscious mixtape track from dear ol’ Bobby Ray, despite the fact that it has no chance of winning this poll. Apparently, people would rather listen to the new Nicki Minaj album than an artist who actually says something in his verses…

Sufjan Stevens – Too Much: Speaking of Ms. Minaj, you may recall Sufjan Stevens as one of the few artists who received an overall positive review from Manhunt Daily. We promise it had nothing to do with his general level of attractiveness. We just love artsy weirdos.

Twin Sister – All Around And Away We Go: Since Twin Sister’s dreamy indie-pop dominated our summer soundtrack, we don’t mind that it’s taken them taking so long to throw this video together. If you like this, be sure to check out the acoustic “White Bread” version.

  1. I’m so sick of rap crap, I could vomit. In spite of Christina on the first track, I wish T.I. and all of his bruthas would disappear. The thought that “those people” are becoming multi-millionaires from that garbage is sickening. Why anyone would pay money to buy that shit is beyond my comprehension. Sorry. Voted for Number 3, just ’cause it’s the least offensive of the bunch, but mostly I hate them all.

  2. Christina’s first number 1 since Lady Marmalade???? Have you FORGOTTEN Dirrty and Beautiful, BOTH number 1 and both after Lady Marmalade… idiot

  3. agree completely — don’t like a single song up there – but 3 is the least offensive

  4. Sufjan! He totally wins my vote, unconditionally. I loved his album Age of Adz. But besides that, I actually liked B.o.B.’s track. And I’m not usually one for rap.

  5. Dirrty stalled at #48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Beautiful although charted higher, unfortunately just reached #2. So Christina’s last #1 was Lady Marmalade believe it or not.

  6. AHH SUFJAN! Manhunt, you have made me proud! ‘Cept for the Christina part. She is dreadful and doesn’t know how to use her voice and I can say that I’m glad her career has gone nowhere. It’s time for Florence Welch & Janelle Monae to take over!

T.I.’s single should be replaced with Kanye’s ‘Monster’, if you want real quality rap. It features Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross & Bon Iver! The video trailer was released and it looks amazing.

But yes, Sufjan is the best of the bunch. He is incredibly talented – wrote, produced and played all instruments on all of his albums and manages to be really cute too! How many artists can say that for themselves? But who are we kidding, really? Sufjan won’t make the cut just ’cause Christina is on this list. Breaks my heart!

  7. Majority of the guys on here don’t listen to rap I don’t know why you keep trying. Just like most don’t like rock or pretty much anything that you can’t dance to. Next time put a Kanye West song on the wild card, cause I’m sure it would skyrocket to Number 1.
