After a discouraging loss in the New York Senate, we're trying to keep our hopes up that New Jersey will pass a marriage equality bill before Republican Chris Christie takes over Jon Corzine's gubernatorial seat in January. The Senate Judiciary Committee passed a proposal to legalize same-sex marriage with a 7-6 vote this Monday, but there are still a few more hoops to jump through before the Garden State becomes the sixth US state to let gay couples wed. It all starts tomorrow, with the NJ Senate debating this measure. Keep your fingers crossed…
And it wouldn't be a battle for our rights without a friendly celebrity endorsement, eh? New Jersey's beloved rock star Bruce Springsteen has stepped out in support of marriage equality. He writes in a statement: ”I’ve long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that, ‘The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is — a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law.’” If the boss says it, it must be true!
UPDATE: Or maybe there won't be a vote in the Senate tomorrow.
