WTF, Hallmark?!?!

There’s nothing like a smart slap to the face to kick-off the Holiday season. Hallmark released it’s annual “ugly sweater” ornament for 2013, featuring a line from the old Christmas classic “Deck the Halls“. There is one small detail about the kitschy ornament, though: Hallmark apparently decided that the word “gay” is offensive and shouldn’t be associated with the most magical time of the year.

They’ve changed the line to read “Don we now our FUN apparel”. WTF, Hallmark? Granted, most gays would probably avoid Hallmark products and hit The Paper Store or Papyrus for a hand-crafted card embellished with real peacock feathers and unicorn tears. But, sometimes we forget it’s our fuck buddy’s 2nd anniversary of getting off the crack and need to make a mad dash to the nearest CVS for a token to mark the occasion. Fuck buddies love that shit!

“Gay” has been perfectly acceptable to the rest of the world since the song was rewritten for English-speaking audiences in 1866. 1866! Get with the program, Hallmark. We’ve tracked down a photo of the inspiration for this year’s ornament and pose the question to you: Are you offended by the word “gay”, or does the overall hideousness of the sweater make it a moot point?

  1. I must disagree with the pic labeled “How It Should Be.” That man should NOT be wearing a sweater…

  2. HOLY SHIT! What a bunch of pussy-ass dweebs at Hallmark! Hell, I’ll opt for American Greetings from now on; they’re less expensive than Hallmark to begin with. I fucking can not believe the audacity of that company!

  3. In their defense, since it is an ugly sweater competition, can you imagine the outcry, had they used the original lyrics, about tying gay people to ugliness? If I were the head of their marketing, I would have avoided that lyric entirely and found another one.

  4. I fully agree, pjbellow – if the idea of using the original lyric became unsavory to them – for whatever reason – they shouldn’t have used any part of it.

  5. Okay, who is the model? I want one of those! The model, not the sweater. Look at those eyes…

  6. Seriously now, being gay, would really WANT to be associated with that sweater? (Just the sweater, not the hot stud in the sweater.)
